The Ups & Downs of Life
  2 is twice as good

3 April 2008

After 10 days of rest, myself and Carrie were up before the sun this morning and back in the saddle of our beloved tandem. It seems like forever since we last rode and it felt good to be out on the road training.

The mornings training took us from our flat in Glenashley along Umhlanga Rocks Drive to gateway and back with an extra loop of the center to add distance. It’s a familiar route that we know very well and we always seem to enjoy the route. It was quite chilly outside and being the end of summer and well towards winter, it was dark when we left. The sun soon exerted it strength and it dawned another beautiful day with a magnificent sunrise.

The goal is still to do the Tour Durban on the 4th of May, giving us little under one month to train – Ouch! I am sure we will finish he race but whether or not we will be able move and whether I HAVE a tandem partner afterwards is another story.

Following the success of the first outing - Myself and Guy headed out on sunday morning. This time Guy wore the heart rate monitor. The route was very different and the graph shows it. It was Guys first ride on a tandem bike and proved a very different experience to what he is used to. This is true for myself to - I had alot more power on the back pedals than with Carrie as well as alot more cycling experience. Carrie - your speed record is still in place though:

My older brother, Guy, arrived from the UK this week and has a very cool Garmin Forerunner 305. It is GPS watch that also measures heart rate and all the usual cycling stats.
On friday morning myself and Carrie went for a longish training ride with this awesome little machine. The heart rate details you see are mine (Bruce).
The course was pretty flat with a few little hills. The weather did not play its part but did not deter us from doing it anyway. It started out pretty windy and finished very wet and windy.
